Te Tai Tokerau Party was founded in 2026 by Mariameno Kapa-Kingi, who won Te Tai Tokerau for Te Pati Maori in 2023 and left that party to stand under a new banner. It campaigns on tino rangatiratanga, local decision-making and mana mokopuna, and says membership is open to anyone eligible to vote, regardless of whakapapa or where they live.
History
Kapa-Kingi was expelled from Te Pati Maori in 2025; the High Court later ruled the suspension and expulsion unlawful and she was reinstated in March 2026. She announced her departure and the new party on 11 May 2026, and the Electoral Commission registered it on 5 August 2026.
